From left to right, Agave's Annie Oakleigh (mule), Bandit Queen (mule), Rose (Pega Donkey) and Calamity Jane (mule). All ready to begin their training. Keep posted for further information!
What are these? These markings were made as part of a RP/Storyline for Long Ear Sanctuary. We have a web link that says "Sponsor" and there are award levels for different "Costs". However when you click on these, what happens is you get one of these markings at random downloaded to your computer. LES In turns uses a Visitor Counter on the bottom of the Sponsor page as a Storyline component. Is actual Money Being Exchanged? No actual money, real or fake, is being exchanged. What happens to these markings? These markings will be exclusive to LES until another set of markings is made to replace them. When they go out of rotation, they will be added to the Cheshire Farms website. All markings were made by JNFerrigno, and hosted at Cheshire Farms.
Agave's Tequila Night (on left) was bred to Tennessee Walking Stallion WHW Fully Automatic using Artificial Insemination. When she was examined a few days later, it was discovered she had two embryos that were fertilized. Mammoth Donkeys have a high occurrence of twins, but they usually do not survive. In cases like these, the other foal has a better chance of surviving in a mare than being transplanted into another donkey, however all of our mares were back in Virginia still! We were going to breed Dogwood's Black Dahlia (on right) so instead we used her as a surrogate. Not sure if she would take or not, we didn't announce her pregnancy until we knew for sure she was going to carry to term. I'm happy to announce the birth of two Tobiano Gaited Mules....
Dogwood's Autumn Rose (left) gave birth to a miniature version of herself the other week. Sorry for the late reply, we've been up to our elbows in babies - literally! On the right, we have Dogwood's Pippit, and her secret surprise foal. A Miniature Spotted Zonky! She might not stay very miniature, but only time will tell.
According to the 2006 report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) titled "The State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture", there were 185 species of Donkeys. Heightened awareness and research funding has shown an increase in breed diversity since 1995 when only 77 breeds were recorded. However while the global number of documented breeds are on the rise, the total number of donkeys are on the decline. According to the current Domestic Animal Diversity Information System hosted by FAO (DAD-IS), there are 194 breeds world wide but more breeds are entering the critically endangered list.
A few months ago we didn't know if we were going to leave the Jennies to foal in Virginia or transport them to their new home in Arizona. Thankfully we were able to get the foaling barn up and ready for our expectant mothers! The girls settled in nicely, and didn't appear stressed from the journey at all, but last night they started showing signs that they would be ready to foal any day now. So now....WE WAIT! I'm so glad that home security systems are easily installable these days, and hopefully we will have the rest of the Jennys on the live cams in the next week.
